CatsMe, a Japan-born AI application that automatically detects a cat’s often-silent signs of pain by analyzing facial expressions in photos, will launch the “Cats Healthcare Campaign” this summer to further advance feline health worldwide.
As the campaign’s first initiative, we will release a summary of our global research findings on cat pain for cat owners, veterinarians, and researchers around the world.
About CatsMe
CatsMe is developed and opperated by Japanese MedTech startup Carelogy Inc. It is an AI app enables you to detect if your cat is in pain by its facial expression within seconds. Its detection accuracy exceeds 96 % and has been validated in joint studies with veterinarians at Nihon University. CatsMe was released in Japan in May 2023 and, it has gained 380,000 users over 50 countries and regions.

CatsMe Development Process
In collaboration with Nihon University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, we collected about 6,000 facial images of cats. Veterinarians then determined whether each image indicated pain or not based on the “Feline Grimace Scale” methodology published by the University of Montreal (this method scores five items, including ear tilt, eye-opening, head position, etc.). By training AI on this classified data set, we have successfully developed a system capable of detecting pain-related facial expressions in cats. And the accuracy of AI pain detection, which was about 90% at the time of the app’s launch, has exceeded 96% thanks to the use of the AI pain detection by users more than 700,000 times and continues to evolve.
“Cats HealthCare Campaign” Study Summary
Study Background
To spur a cross-industry, global effort to safeguard feline health, we believe our proprietary worldwide dataset on cat-pain can provide the critical insights needed to drive meaningful action around the globe.
Study Overview
Study Period : 7/1,2024~/6/30,2025
Methodology : After anonymizing all personal information, we performed statistical analyses on data from CatsMe—including registered cat profiles, AI assessment results, and health-related records.
Sample Size : 139,982
Findings Summary
Analysis of CatsMe AI assessments over the past year shows that approximately 38.7 % of cats were detected to be experiencing pain.

The pain-detection rate correlates with the owner’s perception of their cat’s condition: when an owner felt their cat was “unwell,” 66.2 % of those cats were in pain—about nine times higher than when the owner felt the cat was “good”.

By age group, cats in the 0–2 year “kitten” stage and those 11 years and older exhibited a comparatively higher prevalence of pain.

Also, when owners perceived their cats to have poor appetite, the likelihood of pain detection increased markedly.

Similarly, when owners noticed reduced stool volume, cats showed a higher rate of pain detection.
